Cheese Bread Roll

Filipino cheese roll bread is similar to pandesal (sweet bread). The name literally means cheese is rolled into the bread which is soft and sweet.

We usually buy them at any local bakery in the Philippines. It is a delicious snack on its own or can be paired with any pasta dish.

  • 2¼ tsp active dry yeast

  • 1¼ cup warm water divided

  • 4 cups all purpose flour

  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar + 1 tsp to activate yeast

  • 1 cup warm fresh milk

  • 1 tsp salt

  1. Dissolve yeast in ¼ cup warmth water and 1 tsp sugar. Set aside until it bubbles.

  2. In a standing mixer, with dough hook attachment, mix the flour, sugar, salt , water, milk and the yeast mixture.

  3. If you don't have a mixer, you can knead the dough until its smooth and elastic. Dough will be sticky.

  4. Place the dough on a greased bowl, cover and let it rise for about an hour.

  5. When the size of the dough doubles, divide the dough into 2 and form a log.

  6. Divide the dough into 20 pieces. For each piece, use a rolling pin to make a rectangle.

  7. Place the cheese at the center of the dough and roll it.

  8. Sprinkle with breadcrumbs.

  9. Let the the dough rests for another 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 325°.

  10. Bake the bread for 25 minutes or until golden brown.
