What is a red velvet cupcake? You can easily notice its distinct red color and it has a tangy taste that comes from buttermilk and vinegar. It is made with a combination of buttermilk, butter, cocoa, vinegar, baking soda and flour. The cupcake is light and fluffy because of the buttermilk and baking soda.

Ingredients
Cupcake
- 2 cups all purpose flour
- 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
- 2 tbsp cocoa powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 tsp white vinegar
- ½ cup butter, softened
- 2 tbsp red food coloring
Crem Cheese Frosting
- 8 ounce cream cheese, softened
- 8 tbsp unsalted butter (113 grams), softened
- 3 cups icing sugar (454 grams)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- optional: food coloring
Instructions
Cupcake
- Pre heat oven to 350F. Line two 12 cup muffin pan.
- In a large bowl, beat together butter and sugar.
- Add buttermilk, eggs and food coloring. Mix.
- Add baking soda and vinegar. Mix.
- Add flour, salt and cocoa powder. Mix.
- Pour in the muffin pan. Bake for 25-30 minutes.
Cream Cheese Frosting
- In a bowl, combine cream cheese, butter and vanilla.
- Beat until creamy.
- Add the icing sugar until fully combined.
- Optional: add food coloring
- Spread or pipe frosting on cooled cupcakes.
