Siopao Bun

Siopao is a steamed bun with filling inside like pork asado, bola bola or vegetables. Two of the most popular dim sum places in the Philippines where you can buy them are Kowloon and Hen-Lin. I remember going to Henlin near our house at BF Homes, whenever I crave for delicious siopao and siomai.

When I have leftover pulled pork, I use it to make siopao buns. This is a great snack or "baon" for my kids to bring in school.

Follow the steps below to make the siopao bun. Before placing in the steamer, attach a parchment paper at the bottom of the dough so that it will not stick in the steamer.

Siopao Dough

  • ¾ cup water (warm 115°F)

  • 1 tsp yeast

  • 1 tsp sugar

  • 2 cups flour

Filling

  • meat/veggies of your choice

  1. Dissolve yeast by adding warm water and sugar. Let it stand until bubbles appear on the surface.

  2. In a bowl, put the flour and make a well. Pour the yeast mixture.

  3. Knead until smooth and elastic. Let it rise for an hour.

  4. Divide the dough into 2 equal parts. For each dough divide it again into 6. The total will be 12.

  5. Flatten the dough.

  6. Use a roller to expand the side of the dough, leaving a bump in the middle.

  7. Place the filling.

  8. Gather sides of the edges of the dough, pinch together and twist them.

  9. Place in a tray and rest for 30 minutes.

  10. Steam siopao for 15 to 20 minutes.

  11. Serve it while it is hot.
